The Communication Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buabeng Asamoah,
has hit hard at the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, warning him that assassination and kidnapping have no place in the country’s democracy. It is also not part of the freedom, justice, probity and accountability that the opposition party has been preaching over the years.
Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday to react to the alleged voice on audio said to be that of Ofosu Ampofo plotting against Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson and the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Mr Buabeng Asamoah called on all the right-thinking members of the biggest opposition party to distance themselves from the “these shameful leaderships.”
According to him, the Justice Emile Short Commission of Inquiry was setup by the President to put an end to politically-related violence once and for all, and went a step further by asking NPP to extend an invitation to the NDC to map out a strategy to end all vigilante group activities in the country.
Mr Buabeng Asamoah was, therefore, surprised that Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, whose party has called for an end vigilantism in the country, is rather the person revealing the trend of lies and violence that the NDC intends to “unleash on this country in the coming few days and 2020.”
“On the tape, the NDC Chairman is heard endorsing a campaign of lies, insults and threats against the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church and now Chairman of the Peace Council. A serving elder of a recognised Christian congregation in this country, head of a political party, is heard telling his party members that he now endorses a campaign of calumny and lies against a past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church and Chairman of the Peace Council!
“He didn’t end there, he also threatened the head of the Electoral Commission with the same thing – lies and threats to her person – and of course, as I have already stated, the President of the Republic of Ghana received his fair share of the threats and lies.
“To cut a long story short, these revelations have broken public trust. Trust is at the heart of electoral politics and leadership. The deliberate insincerity and the mendaciousness of the current NDC leadership, including the newly-elected presidential candidate, who initiated boot-for-boot, calls into question whether they are fit for purpose.
“Indeed, in modern governance, a person ought to be fit for purpose: Is the current NDC leadership, including greedy Mahama, fit for the purpose of leading the NDC into the electoral contest of 2020? The preamble of the 1992 Constitution demands that leadership preserve the stability of our nation.
“Listening to the Chairman of a major political party planning to subvert the rule of law with murders, threats of assassinations and kidnapping over the protection and preservation of fundamental human rights, freedoms, unity and stability of our nation, I dare say, until we get to the bottom of this matter this nation is not safe. Ofosu Ampofo and, including greedy Mahama, don’t intend to allow peace to reign in our country so that the rule of law will bring prosperity to all of us.
“The right-thinking members of the NDC ought to move fast and distance themselves from this shameful leadership. Those in NDC who believe in an ideology must rise and demand the resignation of all those culpable and… must be held accountable to the NDC first and to the nation, so that they restore their moral right to participate in the decent politics of this country.”
