NPP’s 2016 victory margin “not real” – Benyiwa-Doe

Former National Women’s Organiser of the opposition NDC, Ama Benyiwa-Doe, has questioned the NPP’s 984,570 victory margin in the 2016 elections stating that the unprecedented figures the party recorded were “not real”.

The former Gomoa West lawmaker alleged that President Akufo-Addo’s hasty removal of Mrs Charlotte Osei and subsequent replacement with Jean Mensa as Electoral Commission Chairperson suggests a grand scheme to rig the 2020 elections.

In an interview with Joy News, the veteran politician insisted that the ruling party was bent on manipulating the EC to their advantage in the next elections.

“Charlotte Osei was removed on pure political grounds; the NPP have realized that she has already identified the loopholes which led to them wrestling power from the NDC as the margin was unreal.

“They fear she would block all the loopholes which afforded them the chance to win power in 2016 during the upcoming election in 2020 with her experience from the past electoral season. That is why they removed her,” she added.

The EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Amankwa, were removed from office following findings of a Committee set up by the Chief Justice to probe petitions of corruption and abuse of office.

The former EC Chair, among other things, was found culpable of breaching procurement laws in the award of a contract to Dream Oval and engaging the legal services of law firm Sory@ Law.

However, a section of the public and some legal brains have argued that the CJ’s committee had no powers to recommend her dismissal.

But President Akufo-Addo on Monday nominated the head of the Institute for Economic Affairs Jean Mensa as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

A statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare named Mr Samuel Tettey and Dr Eric Asare Bossman as Deputy Chairpersons. Ms Adwoa Asuama has also been named as a member of the Commission.
