Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, ICGC, turned 59 on August 31.
The pastor who has been at the center of controversy involving the defunct Capital Bank is also a philanthropist whose outreach spans to the length and breadth of the country.
Notable among his programmes are the Central Aid scholarship scheme and cancer project at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Central Aid Scholarship scheme provides grants to millions of SHS students in the country to further their education.
His cancer project has offered financial assistance to all children with cancer in Ghana.
Pastor Mensa Otabil who is also the former Board of Director of the collapsed Capital Bank made headlines after audit reports from the Bank of Ghana show that Capital Bank, of which Otabil headed, made huge mistakes in taking out depositor’s funds to open yet another bank – Sovereign Bank.
The license of Capital together with that of UT Bank was withdrawn by the Bank of Ghana and the assets handed over to GCB Bank.
However a financial autopsy report- Boulders Report- leaked to the media weeks ago and which contained alleged roles of the directors of the collapsed Banks triggered more criticism against the directors especially the Board chair of Capital Bank.
Dr Otabil later released a statement clarifying his position in the collapse of Bank.
