Ghana’s Amputee Football Team Cries Out for Support Despite Winning Trophies
After their triumphant victory at the 1st African Para Games in Accra, Ghana's National Amputee Team is urgently seeking support and compensation from the government. Despite their impressive performance, the team has yet to receive adequate bonuses and support, impacting their motivation and performance.
During a recent visit from Ghana's Ambassador to Egypt, Lt. Gen. Obed Boamah Akwah (Rtd), representing President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo, the Ambassador encouraged the team to focus on their upcoming quarter-final match against Tanzania, emphasizing the national significance of their victory.
Team Captain Richard Arthur Opentil expressed gratitude for the Ambassador's visit but highlighted the team's challenging conditions. "Despite winning two trophies for Ghana, we have yet to be adequately compensated. This lack of support from the government has affected our motivation and ability to perform at our best for Ghana," he stated.
The players pointed out the disparity between their treatment and that of the Angolan team, who received cash incentives while they lacked basic necessities such as water. "We are disappointed in the government," Opentil said. "But we are motivated to honor Mr. Samson Deen, President of the NPC Ghana and the African Paralympic Committee, who, along with Amputee Football chairman Mr. Foster Kwarteng, has supported us in every way possible."
The Ambassador's visit and his cash donation of USD 1000 boosted the team's morale, but they continue to seek adequate support and compensation from the government. As they prepare to face Egypt's formidable football clubs, the team calls on the government to acknowledge their achievements and provide the necessary support to help them excel.
