Golden Shuttlers Receive Hero's Welcome in Accra After Badminton Triumph
Ghana’s Golden Shuttlers, the U-19 Junior National Badminton team, returned home to a rousing welcome at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Friday evening. Arriving via Kenya Airways after their victorious performance at the 2024 All Africa Youth Badminton Championship in Senegal, the team won three gold medals and a bronze, greeted by fans and supporters donning national colors.
In the mixed relay team category, Ghana emerged victorious against Benin with a 60-50 aggregate score. The winning team comprised Addo Leslie, Nii Adote, Adu-Minta Obapomba, Ankrah Jonathan, Amofa Andy, Moslena Ama Korama Adu, Quarcoo Racheal, and Awa Camara. In the men's triple team category, Ghana defeated South Africa 3-1, with team members Addo Leslie, Nii Adote, Adu-Minta Obapomba, and Ankrah Jonathan. In the women's triple category, Ghana beat Algeria 3-1 to claim gold, with the team including Adu Moslena Ama Korama and Quarcoo Racheal.
Mr. Yeboah Evans, President of the Ghana Badminton Association, congratulated the team on their impressive performance. “Winning three gold medals and one bronze elevates our status and opens new opportunities for the sport,” he said. Highlighting the achievements, Mr. Evans emphasized the growing interest and support for badminton in Ghana, urging corporate institutions to get involved to help expand the sport's reach.
Head Coach Moses Adu praised the athletes for their dedication, noting that Ghana made history by winning the Air Badminton event, a first in Africa, alongside retaining their traditional badminton title. Deputy Captain Moslena Ama Korama Adu expressed the team’s excitement and commitment to bringing more medals home, acknowledging the support of their coach and the role of divine guidance in their success.
