Revenge gone wrong? Police Kills 7 in ‘mistaken identity’ at Manso

Tempers are seriously flaring at Manso in the Ashanti Region after police officers gunned down seven suspected armed robbers in the area on Tuesday.

According to the police, the seven were suspected to be part of a syndicate that robbed passengers onboard a Sprinter bus with registration number AC-644-15 at Akirebikrom last week in which a police officer, Lance Corporal Tieku died in the attack.

Barely 24 hours after the incident, relatives and close associates of the deceased have come out to accuse the police of killing innocent people, who had no hand in the robbery attack last week.

Three out of the seven so-called armed robbers have been identified as sympathizes of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) – a claim the MCE of Asokore Mampong, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, has corroborated.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) further joined in the condemnation, accusing the police of “extreme negligence”.

“These are people that I can never point a single finger at them to say that they have been involved in any act of armed robbery.

“So, it took me by surprise…not me alone, but throughout the community. Everybody is so [surprised] by the way the matter has unfolded but here we are,” the MCE is quoted as saying.

According to reports monitored by, radio stations in Kumasi have been flooded with calls by aggrieved family members and friends of the killed ‘robbers’, who are threatening mayhem, if the police does not come clean on the matter.

However, sources close the Ashanti Regional police command says the police would address the public on the incident by the close of today.
