Deputy Majority Leader, Afenyo-Markin says Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin must improve on his conduct as the Speaker of Parliament.
“The issue is about his conduct in the Chamber, so far so good, but there is more room for improvement,” he told host Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm.
According to the Deputy Majority Leader, although the Speaker is a leading member of the NDC, the onus is on him to show absolute neutrality in the House as Speaker despite his background.
Nonetheless, the Effutu lawmaker admitted: “Naturally, he’s an NDC member and a leading member of that political party. You don’t expect him to do away with his partisan views especially so when he was brought in by his party. He was nominated by his party leadership for this position.”
His comment comes on the heels of the pronouncement made by the Speaker in relation to the Assin North constituency seat tussle.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has said he cannot declare the Assin North Parliamentary seat vacant despite the ruling by a Cape Coast High court.
“Mr. Speaker is not clothed with the legal basis to make a pronouncement on the matter and can thus not declare the occurrence of a vacancy in the House pursuant to the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of the House,” the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Nsiah said in a statement on Sunday.
This was in response to a letter dated August 31, 2021, written to Parliament and served on the clerk by a bailiff from the Law Court Complex in Accra.
