Thierry Henry vows to fight on
Thierry Henry has vowed to fight on after receiving a vote of confidence by Monaco following a crushing 4-0 to Paris-Saint Germain.
The Arsenal legend has now failed to win in his first six games as head coach and his club are only off the bottom of Ligue 1 on goal difference.
The chaos on the Cote d’Azur has seen the Monaco president Dmitri Rybolovlev arrested on corruption charges last week and 16 players out injured, including Nacer Chadli.
Henry, who took over on October 13 after turning down interest from Aston Villa, will have only five fit players to work with during the international break.
The Frenchman said: “I had said before the match that it couldn’t get any worse – and now it is!
“It is always the same story: we have chances, we concede goals and we lose players. Of course the team is affected mentally and you see it with some basic errors.
“I am maybe going to start playing again! But you have to carry on, hang on. It has not always been easy in my life but you always have to try keep moving forward.”
Monaco won Ligue 1 in 2016-17 with a squad including Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Joao Moutinho and Kylian Mbappe, but have been in a downward spiral since.
After selling Joao Moutinho and Fabinho this summer, the Russian-owned club have now gone 16 games without a win to equal their worst run since 1968-69.
Henry has had to chop and change personnel and tactics and the January transfer window seems a long way away.
Vice-president Vadim Vasilyev insisted: “Henry is here for the long term. He is not a firefighter – otherwise we would have sought another profile.
“We are the victims of a set of incredible and unbelievable circumstances. Any club, even Paris, would have had problems with 13 or 14 players injured. But what I saw against PSG was not enough. It is not because this club is called AS Monaco that we are going to escape from the situation.”
Monaco will face Patrick Vieira’s Nice on December 7.
Arsene Wenger said: “Thierry has the right understanding, the right knowledge.
“But, there is always two aspects as you come in as a new manager. The first impact is psychologically positive, and then you can work. At the moment, the bad luck for him, is that the first impact has not worked so he will have to be given time, that is the most important thing for him.
“He will get it right if he is given time.”
