Villa edge Derby to seal Premier League return

Aston Villa ended their three-year exile from the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Derby County in the Championship play-off final – and the £170m TV bounty that comes with victory at Wembley.

Anwar El-Ghazi’s head gave Dean Smith’s side the lead on 44 minutes from Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross before John McGinn benefited from some awful goalkeeping on 59 minutes by Kelle Roos to nod the second into the net on 59 minutes.

Frank Lampard’s Derby were not finished and breathed new life into the contest on 81 minutes when Jack Marriott swept a low shot into the net after Florian Josefzoon’s cross was headed back across goal by Jayden Bogle.

Despite being forced to endure a frantic finale and seven minutes of added time, Villa – who lost this final 1-0 to Fulham a year ago – clung on grimly to seal their return to England’s top flight three years after being relegated with Prince William and John Carew among the delighted fans.
