Vote for leaders who can work with Akufo-Addo- NPP delegates told

A Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament is cautioning the New Patriotic Party delegates against voting for candidates who cannot work with President Akufo Addo.

Mathew Nyindam insists the party needs a new breed of leaders who would be able to carry the party after election 2020 and break the eight-year leadership jinx in the country.

None of the two major parties- NPP and NDC- has been able to win a third consecutive election in the history of the Fourth Republic.

Nyindam believes it is about time for the NPP to win a third consecutive election but that will depend on the leadership elected by delegates on Saturday.

Over 6000 NPP members are heading to Koforidua to elect new party leaders. Of the positions available for the taking, the Chairmanship position appears to be a keen contest.

Acting chair, Freddie Blay faces stiff competition from four-time failed aspiring chairman Stephen Ntim with Dr Amoako Baah also hoping to cause an upset.

John Boadu is also hoping to make an easy transition from the National Organiser role to the General Secretary role, a position he has acting in for some two years now after the substantive secretary Kwabena Agyepong was suspended together with Chairman Paul Afoko and second Deputy Chair Sammy Crabbe.

Mathew Nyindam said the party delegates must avoid repeating the same mistakes they committed in Tamale when they voted the Paul Afoko led executives into office.

“We expect delegates to vote for people who will move us beyond 2020. We want to break that cycle of parties being in power for eight years. We want to go beyond eight years and we want delegates to vote for people who will champion and fight for the cause of our party,” he said.

He said the delegates should vote for people who will support the president and carry through with the policies of the government.

Meanwhile organizers of the conference say all is set for the programme to kick off without hitches.

Eastern Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Dafour is also cautioning delegates against engaging in violence.
