We’ll make police better by using technology – PPP activist

A leading member of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and a Security Management expert, Raymond Assifuah has stated that the PPP, when given the mandate to govern this country, will ensure that the background of would-be recruits are properly investigated before enrollment.

Additionally, he said, a PPP government will provide what he termed ‘Anger Management’ courses and constant supervision on the use of technology to ensure that there is discipline in all the country’s security agencies.

Mr Assifuah made these comments on the background of recent police brutalities on innocent civilians in the country.

Speaking on PPP Nyinasuao on Amansan Television in Accra, he admitted that the recent cases of police brutalities were indications of structural weaknesses in the service, which required professionalism in tackling the issue devoid of partisan politics.

He further explained that what the Police Administration needed was to ensure that its recruitment process was thorough and robust enough to fish out notorious people from entering into the service.

He noted, however, that training module of the service needed some form of improvement. He bemoaned that out of the 6-month training for recruits, only two weeks are used for weapon handling, a situation he attributed to the poor handling of weapons by many police personnel in the county.

“Weapon handling without proper anger management training could be dangerous,” he added.

He advised the government to devote more funds to the Police Service to enable the institution procure modern policing techniques such as CCTVs, drones, bulletproof vests among others to enhance their operations.

“A PPP administration would ensure that the police institution is adequately resourced to enable them serve with integrity so that they can protect lives and property,” he noted.
