Woman shot dead in renewed Alavanyo clashes
A woman has reportedly been shot dead by an unknown assailant in what appears to be renewed clashes in Deme, a town in Alavanyo in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, according to citinews.com.
The report which was confirmed by the Assemblyman for the Area, Raymond Chorkor, has also left another seriously injured.
Atta Yao Rejoice, 40, was said to be returning from the farm when she was shot at the entrance of her house by the assailant who fled into a nearby bush after the attack, according to eyewitnesses.
The other victim, an 80-year-old woman, who was hit by the bullets survived and is currently receiving treatment at St Margaret Marquette Catholic Hospital at Kpando.
The Assemblyman for the Area, Raymond Chorkor, said the police and the military were at the scene to launch an investigation into the matter.
The attack follows a recent alleged abduction of an elder from the Alavanyo dynasty, after he had gone missing during their festival.
Alavanyo has been home to similar acts of violence typically attributed to the protracted land dispute between the town and the nearby Nkonya traditional area.
However, security personnel have advised that such incidences be decoupled from the land dispute.
They argue that the crimes must be treated in isolation, investigated and perpetrators dealt with.
