Yiadom saves three Reading fans

Reading FC star Andy Yiadom saved the day as three fans were left without tickets for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium, writes James Earnshaw.

Dean Cooke, Frankie Guinane and Alex Drury headed across to the Potteries from Derby, where they are studying Football Journalism at university.

However, following a hectic week, all three had forgotten to purchase tickets after the game had been changed to an all-ticket fixture, with none available on the day.

But up stepped Royals fan Jacob Potter, 23, friend of Cooke’s and Editorial Assistant at Football League World.

Potter had been made aware of the ticket error on Friday night and tried to help out by messaging some Reading players on Instagram.

It was picked up by kind-hearted Ghana international Yiadom who gladly left three of his complimentary tickets for family and friends behind reception at the bet365 Stadium.

Royals ended up drawing 0-0 with Stoke to return home with a point, Yiadom with a clean sheet and three supporters overjoyed with the generosity shown by the summer signing from Barnsley.

Guinane, 18, said: “It was kind of weird because we were on the train on our way to Stoke and still weren’t sure if we had tickets or not.

“When we got there we went to reception in the fancy part of the ground to collect the tickets. I was shocked he had actually come through and got us tickets and didn’t have to pay for them.

“They were £25 each which was a lot of money. It made me think, ‘Would Premier League players do that?’”

Meanwhile, Cooke, 20, linked Yiadom’s generosity to the closer link between players and fans under the management of Jose Gomes.

“It was brilliant that Yiadom did that,” he declared. “We’ve had a number of years where there has been a massive disconnection between the players and the fans, but it’s things like this that start to bring back the love for Reading and the squad.

“I’ve heard Yakou Miete has done it a few times too, and now Andy Yiadom. The players clearly have the fans in mind now and that’s good to know as a supporter who travels across the country weekly to follow them. Let’s hope we get more characters like him in the squad”.
