UN celebrates Kofi Annan five years on
In 2018, Ghana lost one of its most esteemed international diplomats in Geneva, Switzerland. This revered diplomat was none other than Kofi Annan.
Kofi Annan dedicated his life to serving the United Nations, and his journey within this global organization was nothing short of remarkable. He ascended through its ranks to ultimately hold the prestigious position of Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006.
During his tenure, Kofi Annan’s dedication and contributions to global peace and diplomacy were so profound that he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.
On the fifth anniversary of his passing, the United Nations community, led by its current Secretary-General, came together to reflect on the enduring values that Kofi Annan championed during his tenure as the world’s foremost diplomat.
The United Nations’ official social media accounts shared a wealth of content dedicated to Kofi Annan, including photographs, inspiring quotes, videos, and highlights of his remarkable achievements.
This commemoration served as a testament to his enduring legacy within the international community.
UN chief Antonio Guterres’ message read: “Friday marks five years since the passing of former @UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
“I was honoured to call Kofi Annan a mentor and proud to call him a friend. His legacy as a global champion for peace remains an inspiration in our lives and our work.”
Kofi Annan came into this world on April 8, 1938, in Kumasi, Ghana. He shared his life journey with his beloved wife, Nane, and together they had three children and were blessed with five grandchildren.
On August 18, 2018, at the age of 80, Kofi Annan passed away in a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, following a short illness. Remarkably, he remained engaged in the activities of his foundation until his untimely departure.
