Para Powerlifting Association Marks World Disability Day with Championship
The Para Powerlifting Association of Ghana commemorated the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
This year’s global theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” inspired the event, which showcased the strength and resilience of athletes with disabilities across Ghana.
Over 50 athletes participated in the championship, which was organized under the auspices of the National Paralympic Committee.
The event aimed to rank athletes in para powerlifting and identify potential talent for international competitions.
Dr. Abena Tanor, Vice President of the Para Powerlifting Association, emphasized the importance of empowering persons with disabilities:
"This championship highlights their capabilities and sends advocacy messages to reduce stigma and promote support.
It also serves as preparation for the Paralympic Games, with classification and medical examinations conducted to ready athletes for future competitions."
Ignatius Elletey, a member of the association, highlighted the strategic purpose of the event.
"This championship provides an opportunity to address the challenge of limited athlete representation for international events and also allows us to rank and identify new talent to prepare for the upcoming season, he added.
Participants expressed gratitude for the platform, noting its role in boosting confidence and encouraging others to discover and embrace their abilities.
They called on persons with disabilities to explore their potential and join the sport.
The association announced plans for another national competition in June 2025 to continue its mission to support and promote para powerlifting in Ghana.
