NPP MP warns Akufo-Addo that Ofori-Atta’s prolonged tenure jeopardizes his legacy

Eugene Boakye Antwi, a Member of Parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) representing the Subin constituency, has commented on the decision to retain Ken Ofori-Atta as the Minister for Finance despite concerns about the state of the economy under his oversight.

Boakye Antwi noted that the decision ultimately rests with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, but he emphasized that Ofori-Atta’s continuation in office could impact the president’s legacy.

Boakye Antwi, who has been vocal in calling for Ofori-Atta’s removal, mentioned that his stance is not a personal matter but is driven by concerns about the NPP’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 general election. He explained that if members of the government are not performing well, it could negatively affect the party’s fortunes. Therefore, he believes that it is the responsibility of party members to express their opinions and concerns to the president.

Last year, during a period of economic challenges, some members of the NPP, including MPs, urged President Akufo-Addo to dismiss Ofori-Atta from his role as Finance Minister. However, the president advised that the issue be set aside until Ghana’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were finalized and the 2023 budget was presented and approved.

Boakye Antwi maintained that if the president remains unyielding, there might not be a reason to continue pushing for Ofori-Atta’s removal. Ultimately, the decision lies with President Akufo-Addo, and the party members’ concerns highlight the complex relationship between party politics, government performance, and electoral prospects.
